Art Nouveau is a decorative art and is French for the term “New Art.” This new art was first pioneered by a man named William Morris, who was a furniture maker, in the Arts and Crafts Movement. This art employs quick curves and flowing lines. Although this art began in Europe, it was an international success. Art Nouveau is all about making an impression. Big flowing lines is the main characteristic and can be incorporated in many ways in art, fashion, and home interiors. The organic feel can spruce up any interior with ease. Afterall, it is considered a decorative art. Art Nouveau went back to handmaking, instead of machine-making and rejected earlier styles. Art Nouveau is definitely meant to make a statement.

Craving some Chevron?

Chevron is commonly referred to as the “zig zag” pattern and has been gaining popularity at a rapid rate. Chevron can be dated back to modern-day Greece where it was found in pottery and rock-carvings. It was even used as an insignia to describe ranking in the military. Today, you see chevron everywhere; on walls, on people, on furniture, and even on art. Chevron can be bold and bright or subtle to add some simplicity to any home. Mad for Plaid?

Plaid is a traditional dress color that originated in Scotland. To the Scottish, plaid is referred to as tartan, and is worn over the shoulder. Plaid comes in an assortment of colors today and has recently become a fashion and interior decorating trend. Hints of plaid work better than a bunch of it. Plaid can bring a sense of warmth and coziness if implemented correctly. It combines well with a rustic feel and modern design. Used sparingly, plaid is considered to be luxurious and sophisticated. Backsplash Bang – Bookcase to Wine Cabinet

before-after I have been wanting a wine rack for my house for a while now, and just haven’t been able to find one that I like. So when I got my Funature in the mail, I of course imagined a wine cabinet. I laid out all the pieces and looked at what could be done with the bookcase. I tested to see if the shelves would be deep enough for a wine bottle and they were.

With a leftover Art Nouveau backsplash panel and some scrap wood, my bookcase went from ho-hum to hooray! See how…

As I was putting the bookcase together, I started drafting my specific plans. I was going to leave the door off and use it differently. The height of the case needed increased so I decided to add legs and a tray to the top for making and carrying drinks to your guests. The tray needed to have an inset on the bottom so that it would sit securely on the cabinet. Can I do this for $25? I searched the garage and basement. I had paint, glue and plenty of scrap wood. I will need legs and a wine glass holder.

I got to work. I added an extra piece of wood to the bottom of the cabinet. A little piece of trim finished this off perfectly so you couldn’t see the wood at the bottom. Then I screwed in the metal pieces that hold the legs. I tested it to make sure it was stable. The legs were a great addition, and super easy to do. The legs I bought fit my budget, but I was imagining chunkier feet. Those were about $7-8 a piece – that was out of my range. I ended up really liking the ones I got though.

Next, I worked on the tray for the top of the wine cabinet. You can tell from the pictures this is REALLY scrap wood. I would have liked a slightly smaller height for the tray, but this was the wood I had sitting around.

After the tray was all nailed together (just made a rectangle and used a trim brad pneumatic nail gun to put it together), I used a jigsaw and a drill bit to cut out the handles. I sanded it up a bit to smooth out any rough edges. At this point, I had made my final decision to paint the wine cabinet black. I went ahead and finished off the tray by painting it and adding the backsplash panel to the bottom and a little strip on the front.

To add the panels, I measured the inside of the tray and used a t-square and a utility knife to cut the panel. I scored the panel six times with the utility knife for each cut. Then turned it over and bent it to break. It worked great. I also planned to use some of the panel for the back of the cabinet so I went ahead and measured and cut that piece too. I used Liquid Nails to apply the panels in both cases (for the back of the cabinet you need to apply pressure by laying it on its back for an hour until the glue dries).

Time to make the space for the wine itself. I used a W shape – this holds 5 bottles. It is also very hard to paint. If you decide to use this shape, paint the boards before installing them. This too was put together using a nail gun. wine cabinet painted Lastly, time to paint. I used a black primer and then a glossy black paint as the second layer. When it was dry I added the backsplash panel I had cut earlier and the wine glass holder. The only piece left was the leftover door. I didn’t want to cover my glasses – so I made the door so it was permanently open.

The Final Reveal – Bang! My Wine Cabinet

bsbangphoto 1005 Design has decided to start off the New Year with a bang! Not just any bang, “the backsplash bang!” I’m sure you have all heard of Ikea hackers and other similar DIY challenges; if you haven’t, you do not know what you are missing! The hacks and challenges you see are DIY reconstructions of a particular item or items purchased and recreated and evolved into something new and exciting. “The backsplash bang” is 1005 Design’s daring way of incorporating our beautiful backsplashes into a specific project.

Backsplash Bang Bookcase:

For our first project we have chosen the Furrino 2-tier bookcase storage shelves with a cabinet door. When this was delivered to us we found it was actually called “FUNiture” instead of furniture! This made the backsplash bang even more exciting! To make this project even more interesting, we created specific rules and guidelines to make it really BANG!

Backsplash Bang Rules:

Let me elaborate, there are three contestants and each contestant has the same piece of “funiture” and one backsplash panel of their choice. Each person has an allowance of $25.00 for new materials. Any materials that are already around the house are allowed and will not be calculated into the $25.00 allowance total. This makes our backsplash bang a $50.00 project!

The copper weave backsplash has inspired a safari themed kitchen décor. Have you ever noticed the kitchen in your workplace? Usually, the kitchens that we see in the offices that we work in can be very boring, dull, and ugly. Typically a kitchen at work is used for the preparation of coffee and heating up your lunch for the day, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be inviting. 1005 Design has transformed workplace kitchens into a more inviting and warm kitchen.

The Surgery Center in Toledo, Ohio has been redesigned with the Copper Brush Backsplash.

Here is another view so you can see how well the natural light reflects the beauty of the copper.

The Surgery Center chose to use the trim pieces in this application. The copper brush backsplash really creates a calm and clean look in this kitchen.

The Stainless Steel Weave pattern is located in the American Trim Design Center in Lima, Ohio

This Vintage Victorian inspiration board uses the copper finished backsplash with the Art Nouveau design. My inspiration for the kitchen came from the Art Nouveau pattern in the backsplash to utilize the Victorian theme. The soft curvy lines of the decorative Art Nouveau is featured throughout many accessories. The copper finish inspired other vintage accessories found throughout the board. This era featured darker colors such as the green seen in Valspar’s Leafy Rise. Valspar’s Malted Milk paint color is crisp and clean and used on the cabinets.
