The key to making your kitchen a place for peaceful inspiration, family fun and of course the ultimate cooking haven, is mixing materials and textures that bring about the perfect piece of mind. The secret is juxtaposing the very classic natural pieces like wood, stone, vegetation or burlap against a modern glass, metal, leather or fabric pattern.

materials-textures

The kitchen below is a great example of creating an updated rustic kitchen style by combining stone, glass tiles, wood, leather, fabrics and beautifully shiny stainless steel appliances.

To bring more of a Tuscan flair to the kitchen it is about the right colors, patterns and mix of organics. This kitchen shows that by mixing, granite, dark cabinets, great wall color and a decorative metal backsplash the look is easy to accomplish.

tuscan-kitchen-style

Mixing material doesn’t necessarily have to make a colorful or strong statement. This kitchen mixes a variety of materials to perfectly obtain a minimalist, romantic kitchen style. Demonstrating that it is all in the boldness of the color of the materials you select. Here there is ceramic tile, marble, wood flooring, white wood and metal lights and appliances along with lots of organics mixed into the design keeping the palette very neutral and the statement very peaceful. At the same time you can imagine that the food prep flow would work well, and even with all the white, children helping prepare the food at the island.

romantic-kitchen-style

For our last example of mixing materials to accomplish your kitchen style is a contemporary style. This style mixes wood, fabric/rug pattern, burlap curtains and accessories and metal on the chairs. The wall color is bright and goes along with the floral prints. The color could easily be toned down and get the same effect. This kitchen is another good example of making a statement with mixing materials and how materials and color differ as techniques to gaining a style.

Creating the Line of Symmetry on Backsplash Panels

Working with the 1005 design backsplash panels may be intimidating when the thought of cutting metal comes to mind.  I am here to ease your mind and to give you some helpful tips when cutting your metal backsplash panels.

One of the first and most important things to be aware of when cutting metal is wearing protective eye wear and gloves!

The next step is to mark the line of symmetry.  For those of you that are new to working with metal there is a “harmonious and beautiful proportion and balance” in the 1005 Design decorative metal backsplash panels better known as symmetry.  The other definition of symmetry is the “patterned self-similarity with rules of geometric transformations-reflection and rotation.”

lineofsymmetrydrawing

Protective Film and Label

On each backsplash panel there is a protective film covering and there is also a label on each panel that has a line marked on it instructing you to extend the line to the end of panel.  This is so that each panel may be marked for the line of symmetry to assist you in cutting and installing your panels successfully and without error.

The purpose of this line is to help keep the pattern aligned after you have made a cut.  But more importantly the line will also help ensure that the reflective properties will stay the same as well.  Therefore eliminating a “flip” in the metal or being upside down.  The flip is only necessary when matching a specific pattern such as the weave pattern.

Avoiding the Flip

What is a flip? A flip occurs when changing the direction of the panel or turning it upside down. By changing the direction of the panel or flipping it will change the refection of the pattern in the metal. Depending on the person, this may go unnoticed or it may not.  It is best to use the line a symmetry to avoid flipping the panel. Most importantly it helps ensure that you have cut the panel properly for installing it. And gives you the desired appearance of the backsplash panels after installation.  1005 Design only has one pattern where the flip is mandatory when installing and that is the weave pattern.  In order to keep the flow of the pattern every other panel must be flipped.

One of the best ways that we have found to cut the metal is by using a metal T Square and a utility knife.  This tool helps keep the line straight when scoring and in the same spot.  The T Square also helps with bending the metal after scoring to keep the edge straight.

We hope that this helps give you confidence when installing your new DIY backsplash kit by 1005 Design.  Working with metal can be intimidating because it is a different material from wood and ceramic.  However, working with the decorative metal backsplash panels is rather uncomplicated and easy!

Backsplash Bang #2 Patio Pal

When I received my funiture I wasn’t sure what I was going to turn it into. I quickly assembled the book case into its original form and contemplated on its new creation. Several ideas whirled through my head and many good suggestions were given to me, but they just didn’t sit well with me. And then it hit me! The Patio Pal! I know it seems too early to be thinking about springtime on the patio but I can’t help it, I love springtime and being outdoors! I also love to cook outside and sometimes it can be a bit challenging so I created the patio pal!

This Patio Pal is sure to make a bang in your backyard! A Backsplash Bang!

Here are the Backsplash Bang-Bookcase to Patio Pal Supplies:

backsplashbangsupplies

The rules in this project are to stay under $25.00 in supplies.  The funiture book case and 1005 Design stainless steel brush backsplash were already provided.  I decided to use some contact paper I already had available in my home and some knobs you will see in the final reveal.  I chose to use contact paper instead of painting the bookshelf because contact paper is washable and removable.

The only materials that I purchased additionally are the casters and the cavalier knob.  I was able to purchase both from Menards.  The casters came in a package of 2 for $2.39 each, and the cavalier knob was $1.43!  That is only $6.21 plus tax!  Now that is a ‘bang for your buck!”

Backsplash Bang- Bookcase to Patio Pal Instructions

The Patio Pal is a very simple and sleek design and can be used for many other things.  I chose to use it for my patio when I am grilling!  I can hang my grilling tools on the side and it will clean up easily since the contact paper is washable.  I can store dishes, towels, and condiments on the shelves!  This little patio pal is small enough to take on a camping trip with my little grill also.  I can set my camping grill on top and it makes it just the right height!  I can’t wait until spring so I can use it on my patio!

Backsplash Bang-Bookcase to Patio Pal Final Reveal

This Backsplash Bang came to a total of $31.21! $25.00 for the funiture and $6.21 for extra supplies! Now that is a big bang for your buck!  What would you use the Patio Pal for?

bsbangphoto1005 Design has decided to start off the New Year with a bang!  Not just any bang, “the backsplash bang!”  I’m sure you have all heard of Ikea hackers and other similar DIY challenges; if you haven’t, you do not know what you are missing!  The hacks and challenges you see are DIY reconstructions of a particular item or items purchased and recreated and evolved into something new and exciting. “The backsplash bang” is 1005 Design’s daring way of incorporating our beautiful backsplashes into a specific project.

Backsplash Bang Bookcase:

For our first project we have chosen the Furrino 2-tier bookcase storage shelves with a cabinet door.  When this was delivered to us we found it was actually called “FUNiture” instead of furniture!  This made the backsplash bang even more exciting!  To make this project even more interesting, we created specific rules and guidelines to make it really BANG!

funiturebookcaseblogpic

Backsplash Bang Rules:

Let me elaborate, there are three contestants and each contestant has the same piece of “funiture” and one backsplash panel of their choice.  Each person has an allowance of $25.00 for new materials.  Any materials that are already around the house are allowed and will not be calculated into the $25.00 allowance total.   This makes our backsplash bang a $50.00 project!

How the Backsplash Bang works:

Here is how it works!  Each week in January we will reveal a new backsplash bang! We would like for you, our fans, to cheer us on and leave feedback in regards to the project! At the end of the month we are going to ask you which backsplash bang was your favorite!  We look forward to hearing your comments!  Check back next week for the first reveal!

Finished Dragonfly

Backsplash Bugs! I’m sure you are noticing more and more bugs around.  Here at 1005 Design we are too!   Not just any old bug that you see every year; these are the back splash bugs!  What type of bug is this you ask?  Well, this is the recreation of one of my favorites, the Dragonfly!  I chose the dragonfly because of the symbolism that many cultures have incorporated with it.

A dragonfly is mature, powerful, and poise.  This is true due to it being able to fly at 45 miles per hour.  But in order to make this dragonfly fly, I needed wings!  I needed to make sure that these wings were able to withstand the outdoor elements and still show the grace and beauty of this whimsical creature.  The stainless brush backsplash was the perfect design for my weekend project!  This incredible creature looks amazing perched on just about anything!  Here is how I brought my project to life!

First, I used a staircase spindle for the body.  I used two different colors of craft paint to create the base color, green and purple.  I used a sanding block to expose areas on the body to create a deeper look.  After this I used a brown glaze and covered the wood completely then wiping it off.  I did not allow this to dry.  By doing this it blends the colors together evenly.  I repeated the sanding and gazing process three times and allowed to dry overnight.

The next morning I used a flat black spray paint to add highlights and shadowing of the body.  To create a more realistic iridescent look, I applied a bronze spray paint by just slightly dusting the body to give it a shimmer.  Allow to dry completely.

I removed the ends of the spindle with a miter saw and sprayed the ends with paint.  I used decorative glass rocks for the eyes and a few to accent the tail.

The wings are made of the stainless steel brush backsplash.  I created a stencil with cardboard and traced this onto the back splash before I cut the pieces.  Make sure you wear gloves and eye protection when cutting metal!

I used a jigsaw to cut the wings.  Be sure to clamp the piece of metal down first so that it doesn’t move when cutting.  I sandwiched the panel in between two pieces of cardboard and clamped it down.  This makes the cut more smoothly by keeping the panel from bouncing around.   After the wings were cut, I brushed the edges lightly with sand paper to smooth the cut.  Don’t forget to remove the protective film.

(Tip:  If a piece of your panel is bent or jagged, use a rubber mallet on a flat surface to level it out.)

I attached the wings to the under part of the body.  I used screws to attach the two together.  This was the best option and I recommend doing this slowly so that the wood doesn’t split or splinter.

Here is the Dragonfly!  Now where to put it!  I placed it by the flower pit!  I call it the flower pit because it was a fire pit at one time, now it’s full of flowers!  I like it better as a flower pit.  This allows you to visualize the scale of this creature!  I also placed it here by the fish pond.  I am not sure which one I like the best.  What do you recommend?

So I’ve never been the crafty type myself, but my girlfriend on the other hand can always see an opportunity to transform something. When she saw the 1005 Backsplash in the brush pattern she immediately started telling me about this great project idea, so we made it happen! She combined a great pattern that she got from http://sbuuck.uppercaseliving.net/ShopLanding.m with the backsplash and here’s the step by step instructions!

  1. First step is to remove the protective film from your 1005 backsplash.
  2. Begin to peal the protective film from the pattern decal. Be careful! the pattern is designed to stick once exposed!
  3. Apply the decal to the backsplash using something to help press the pattern firm to ensure that it sticks. Also using a book or something heavy to let rest on the pattern for a few minutes should do the trick.
  4. Once your decals have been applied simply peal the backing carefully and now you have a great UpperCased 1005 Backsplash!

tray4

I love this project. I love it so much I wish I could keep it, but I cannot. I made this for my sister. The interesting part of this project is how I came to create it! So, I’m tinkering in my mom’s basement and I came across this old tray. It’s worn out as you can see in the picture. However, this little tray belongs to my little sister, and I want to bring it back to life. So I took it out the door and took it home. I know that sounds horrible but it really isn’t that bad.

Worn out little tray

I decide to paint this hidden treasure in a matte black. I chose the matte finish because I don’t want any sheen…yet. My sister’s home decor is black and white so this will be perfect! I also didn’t want to salvage the corner pieces; I like a more uniformed look. I used spray paint for this little tray and let it dry overnight.

The next morning I stared at the tray for several minutes thinking, I do not really like this little tray, it needs something more. Something that will make this tray pop! And a light went on to use 1005 design backsplash! I chose my favorite, the art nouveau design in stainless steel. This design will look lovely with her Hodge pod of Greek key and Ikat assorted decorations. I actually found a panel from a previous project and it looked just the right size. Almost! I need to cut it. So I align the pattern evenly to form it into the panel I need. I marked it and scored each side several times to make a clean cut. I used a piece of sandpaper to lightly sand the edges and it is ready to be placed. It fits! And it’s gorgeous.

So I pull it back out, remove the protective film and spray a coat of poly on the tray. Replace the panel and voila! A new makeup tray for my sister’s dresser! This will assist her in organizing! There you have it. Easy peasy!

The process of making a backsplash fit to your wall configuration is relatively easy. For the most part, just adhere it to the wall unless you need to cut it to fit. The task gets a bit trickier once you try maneuvering around your common electrical outlets. However, this can easily be navigated around in a matter of 7 easy steps.

Tools needed- Pencil, Cardboard Insert (From backsplash box or scap), Drill, Jigsaw, clamps, file, and adhesive.

  1. First measure the dimensions of your outlets-finding how far into your backsplash panel they will be helps to pinpoint your cut.
  2. Take your measurements and trace them into a piece of scrap cardboard- the piece included with the box works particularly great for this.
  3. Cut out the outlet pattern from the cardboard using a utility knife.
  4. Take the template and ensure your cutouts match up with your outlets on the wall. Once your outlets match up with your template, trace the outlets onto our backsplash panel.
  5. After tracing the pattern, use a drill to bore out the center of each outlet pattern, this allows for easier access for your jigsaw.
  6. Once you’ve drilled pilot holes, use your jigsaw to carefully cut out the outlet patterns filing down sharp edges if needed.
  7. Now that you’ve successfully cut your holes, apply your adhesive and secure to your wall just like your other panels.

The following video below will help illustrate these steps!

This grill has just the right look!  The mosaic backsplash was cut to fit each of the side shelves on this stainless steel outdoor grill.

After sizing and cutting of the backsplash, magnetic strips were attached to the back of the backsplash.

This allows for easy removal for cleaning and storage.  The mosaic backsplash design added just the right touch to create a more dimensional and diversified design to this average stainless steel outdoor grill!  Great idea!

tattersall

This pattern print is a thin and evenly spaced vertical and horizontal stripe.  Typically this pattern is made of two yarn colors to create a square shaped cloth pattern.  This has been done by the joining of a single piece of yarn, known as the weft, being drawn through the warp.  A warp is the weaving of the cloth.

This treasured print was originated in London of 1766 from the Tattersall’s Market.  “Old Tatt” better known as Richard Tattersall, was the main auctioneer of race horses in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom.  This print pattern was used for the blankets on the horses at the market, and how it received its name.

Tattersall’s Market is still in operation today and is still very well known for their prestigious quality of race horses.  The name has changed slightly by dropping the apostrophe but horse trading is still at large.  The Tattersall print pattern is also still used on shirts such as Flannel s and Polo’s; you may also see it on table clothes, blankets, and other cloth fashions.
